Kepler, you show-off: Sunshine, summit views & cheeky Kea

The Kepler Track really turned it on for us. We hiked in February, in perfect weather, with sunshine pouring across the mountains and hardly a cloud in sight — a rare treat in Fiordland. From the first few steps out of Te Anau to the final descent through beech forest, this track delivered on every front.

Luxmore Hut was an absolute highlight. The views from up there? Next level. Panoramas for days — lake, peaks, layers of Fiordland in every direction. Honestly, even if you’re short on time, a one-night out-and-back to Luxmore is 100% worth it. Sunrise or sunset up there? Unreal.

We even had a couple of cheeky kea drop by, doing their usual aerial patrol and roof-stomping antics. A good reminder to keep your boots inside at night…

One of the best treats on the track? A steaming cup of coffee, thanks to our trusty Jetboil and a stash of epic coffee bags — proof that good views deserve great brews.

It’s a solid three-day loop, and yes, the legs were feeling it by the end, but the variety of terrain keeps it exciting the whole way — alpine ridgelines, mossy forest, waterfall swims, swing bridges, and boardwalks that feel like they belong on another planet.

Pack smart, take your time, and soak it up — Kepler’s the kind of hike that stays with you.
